Benoni is a town situated in the Ekurhuleni municipality. The town was named by then surveyor-general of the Transvaal Republic, Johan Rissik. The name, Benoni, is derived from the Book of Genesis meaning “son of my sorrow” after Rissik battled to determine the exact boundaries of the surrounding.
